Restoration of native fish species and promoting healthy fish communities is a priority for the Alpena Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office (FWCO).

The station is actively involved with native species restoration and management in lakes Huron and Erie, the Huron Erie corridor, and the St. Marys River. A high variation in composition of PBDEs has been found between birds with a similar diet, closely related species and even between the same species from different locations (Polder et al., ).

A Conservation Vision for the Lower Detroit River Ecosystem The Detroit River is one of North America’s greatest rivers in the heart of the Great Lakes Basin. It connects the Upper Great Lakes to the Lower Great Lakes. More than that, it links Canadians and Americans through an inseparable border.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were identified in fish collected from the Detroit River, MI and Des Plaines Rivers, IL. In the Detroit River fish, carp and large mouth bass, the congener patterns were dominated by the 2,2′,4,4′-tetrabromo (BDE) congener; however, in Des Plaines River carp the dominant isomers were the heptabromo congeners BDE and BDE and lesser amounts.
